From Richard McKenney on February 14th, 2023
George:  We went to the AHS graduation together; I worked at your dad's restaurant; there were spirited times in Gloucester & Boston;  you were in my wedding; you had common sense--more than most of us; there wasn't a weight you couldn't lift, nor a moment that didn't conjure a laugh; a great guy and a friend.  RIP Slages.

From John Morse on February 13th, 2023
George was a very close friend whom I met at AHS after he transferred his senior year from Lawrence Academy. We kept in touch over the years even after he moved to Texas in the 70's. I will always miss the fun trips to the Gloucester beaches in his Corvettes and the fun times we had in Boston in the late 60's. My condolences go out to George's family. You will be missed. RIP my friend.

Instead of retiring after a long career as a medical photographer, Marilee went to work for FEMA documenting the aftermath of storms and natural disasters across the country.

Outside of work, Marilee loved the ocean, and sailing and traveling whenever possible. One can only imagine the tales of adventure from her travels with Judy, Carol, and Sally and David.

Marilee was known for her extraordinary talent, her cooking and her humor. She was fearless. A true role model, mentor, and all-around brilliant woman, Marilee enjoyed a good party, especially Fantasy Fest and the Mardi Gras beads!

Marie L. Cullen, 78, died on November 10, 2020 at Westerly Hospital. She was born in Arlington, MA to William A. and Edith (Chester) Libby.
For fifty-four years Marie was the beloved wife of the late Henry J. “Hank” Cullen Sr., Lt. Boston Fire Department.

Marie was a strong woman with a generous heart. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending lots of
time with her family at the lake, having barbecues, and just sitting around talking together.

Mom had a full life. She got to travel and enjoy seeing many parts of this beautiful land with Dad and different family members. She was also full of life too.
She enjoyed each grandchild as they came along, spending as much time with them painting, swimming, laughing together and “spoiling them” as a
Nana does! She loved them all so very much!!

Marie’s home was warm and welcoming with the many plants she had and plenty of seating for all her friends that would stop by at any time - smiling and
welcomed by mom to come in and sit and have tea and talk.

Marie will be remembered most for her heartfelt faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She would share the hope found in the Bible about a better future
soon to come with everyone who came to visit. She is dearly missed and will always be in our hearts and memories.

She is survived by four children: Michael, Edith, Henry and Mary; seven grandchildren: Joshua and Daniel, and Joshua’s wife Tara, Mikayla and Ryan
and Mikayla’s husband Tyler, and Myles, Bernie and Bridget and Bridget’s husband Rene, and two great-grandchildren Isla and Asher. She is also
survived by her brother, James Libby of Maryland and was predeceased by two brothers John Libby and William Libby.

There was a private family viewing. Condolences may be offered to her family and remembrances of Marie shared online at www.carpenterjenks.com.

But through it all, when there was doubt, I chewed it up and spit it out.
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way."

She is cured, she is healthy again and my greatest hope is that upon her arrival into Heaven, Richard was there waiting for her asking for this dance. She worked fervently here on earth positively impacting countless lives of children, friends and family. I often referred to her as the "Queen of the Silver Lining" as she found joy and promise and beauty in every single thing. I am a better person for knowing her and I sought great joy in surprising her with things that meant much to her and moments that would make her smile. It was euphoric for me to make an already happy person happier and she made it easy.

This past year, I have been incredibly honored to be with her, to help her, to ease her, to talk to her and learn from her. I reminded her often how amazing of a person she was, how loved she was and how much I admired her for everything she exemplified.

She is and will always be an amazing mother to Heidi and Erik, grandmother to Christian, Sydney, Emily, Adaline and Melanie, mother-in-law to myself and Manny, Aunt, teacher, wife, sister, daughter and friend. As her sister Ginny said, "You only die when people forget about you." Her work on earth is complete, but her legacy will last forever. We love you, Rita.

Daughter in law April Okerholm

Image It's with GREAT sorrow that I heard of the passing of Rita. We were classmates since kindergarten at Brackett school. I walked by her house nearly everyday, and sometimes she would join me in our trek up the lower hill at Robin's Farm to make it to class on time. I loved her beautiful red hair. She is standing beside me (to my left) in this Brackett School 6th grade class photo, (click on the photo, at left, to enlarge it) and if the photo were in color, you could admire her beautiful red hair, too.

April,  What a magnificent tribute to Rita--so well written & from the heart.  I met Rita in 7th gr. & knew her through our graduation.  She was always upbeat & fun.  Last time we chatted was @ our 50th & she was still full of life, fun & funny!

My deepest sympathy to you & the entire family.

From STUART BELDEN on November 27th, 2017
Neil and I were very close friends.  After AHS we both went to B.U. together, played hockey longer than we should have, and consumed more beer than one would think possible.   Neil was an usher at my wedding and we remained friends for many years after.  He was truly one of the good guys and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Obituary

Betty Villari, a long-time Provincetown resident, died on Aug. 28, 2017, surrounded by loved ones at Cape Cod Hospital, from complications associated with breast, bladder and lung cancers. She was 74 years old.

Betty was born in Dorchester on Dec. 2, 1942, to the late Charles and June (Ristaino) Villari with a severe form of hip dysplasia. For eight years her mother brought her from doctor to doctor until she found one who would treat her. It paid off.

“At that time, I was in the hospital for a year. They basically strapped my legs to two two-by-fours and separated them but by bit,” Betty told the Banner back in June. “The whole experience made me determined not to be held back ever again. I learned to walk by pushing a chair across the floor.”

Betty moved to Provincetown in 1975, where she tended bar and worked in restaurants. In 1985, she became one of the early owners of the Provincetown Gym, where she was a personal trainer for 20 years, mostly for clients who had disabilities. She was on the board of trustees at the Methodist Church, served on the Provincetown Town Scholarship Fund and was on the board of directors of the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown.

Betty was one of the founding members of Helping Our Women, where she served on its board since its inception. At HOW’s annual meeting on June 20, 2017, Betty was honored for her lifetime of service.

She is survived by her sisters, Patricia Higgins of Clinton Township, Mich., and Judy Hudson and husband, Carl Hudson, of Jamaica Plain; nieces Amy Walls and husband, George Hatch, of Needham, Kerrie Wittman and husband, Jim, of Novi, Mich., Jennifer Burkat and husband, Scott, of Westwood; nephews Kip Higgins and wife, Sally, of Kalamazoo, Mich., Kevin Higgins and wife, Lisa, of Warren, Mich., Matthew Hudson and wife, Carol, of Wellesley, Scott Hudson and wife, Marketa, of Prague, Czech Republic; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. She is also survived by her best friend and long-time companion, Gary Pasnick, of Provincetown; Rev. Jim Cox and her friends at the United Methodist Church in Provincetown; and countless friends.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, at Gately Funeral Home, 94 Harry Kemp Way. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Provincetown United Methodist Church, 20 Shank Painter Road. Donna M. Lydon

September 8th, 2015

Donna Mae Lydon (Reilley), of Wilmington, passed away on September 8, 2015, at the Care Dimensions Kaplan Family Hospice Home in Danvers, MA, after a courageous 13-year battle with tongue cancer. She was surrounded by her family. Her faith in God carried her through this long ordeal.

Donna was born in Lynn MA on September 5, 1942, the only child of James and Catherine (Williams) Reilley. Donna’s parents died in a car accident when she was 7 years old and she was raised in Arlington, MA by her godmother, Elizabeth (Williams) Poirier and her husband, Paul Poirier, along with her new loving sister, Carol Poirier.

Donna graduated from Arlington High School in 1960 and Boston State Teachers College in 1964. She married the love of her life and best friend, Ken Lydon, on August 22, 1964. Donna taught school for three years in Quincy MA before retiring from teaching to raise her four wonderful children. She and Ken, along with their two sons, Christopher and Russell, moved to Wilmington in July 1969. The family was then blessed with the addition of two daughters, Catherine in 1969 and Jennifer in 1971.

Throughout her life, Donna loved to garden, care for all the family and neighborhood pets, and cook. Her favorite saying was, “if you can read, you can cook.” She treasured her grandchildren and made each moment she spent with them magical. Donna was very active in her community, especially with the Cub Scouts with the Greater Lowell Scouting Councils and Camps. In 1983 she was awarded the Boy Scouts’ prestigious Silver Beaver Award. Donna worked as a substitute teacher in the Wilmington Public Schools and was active with the PAC at the Woburn Street School, where she initiated the annual pumpkin fair, which continues on today. Donna was a communicant at St. Thomas of Villanova Church for 47 years. She was a member of the Wilmington American Legion Post 136 Ladies Auxiliary, serving as the recorder for many years. She was also a waitress at Stelio’s Restaurant. This allowed her to be at home to raise her four children and meet many people who became her long-lasting friends.

Donna loved to travel with her husband, Ken. Together they went to Ireland, Hawaii, and on many trips to other parts of the country. They loved skiing at Bretton Woods and spending summers at the beach at Seabrook NH.

Donna is survived by Ken Lydon, her loving husband of 51 years; son Christopher, his wife Pam and grandson, Jack of Marietta GA; son Russell, his wife Patty, granddaughter Delaney and grandson Nick of Clifton Park NY; daughter Kati and Jim Murphy and grandsons Russell and Matthew Murphy of Billerica; and daughter Jennifer, husband Sean Theodos, and grandson Sean Paul Theodos, Jr. of Wilmington. Donna is also survived by her sister, Carol Fairchild of Amherst MA, along with many sisters- in- law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Jim was a close friend for many years, since 7th grade actually. That I'll
miss him is an understatement. I feel fortunate that I talked to him the day
 before he died.

Since Jim loved boating this remembrance is fitting for him.

               Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails
to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength.

I stand and watch her untill at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other

Then someone at my side says "There, she is gone!"

"Gone Where?" Gone from my sight. That is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear the load of living
freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at moment when someone at my side says,
"There, she is gone!"

There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout:
"Here she comes!"   And that is dying.

                                                  Van Dyke

My friend, have a fresh breeze at your back to speed you
to your next harbor.

Dr. Daley
Dr. Michael Daley
(1942-2010)

Dr. Michael L. Daley, 67, a resident of Germantown, TN, died unexpectedly Monday, February 8, 2010, in Memphis, TN. He was the son of James J. Daley and Agnes E. (Hallisey) Walton and graduated from Arlington, MA, high school. He served in the USAF, 1960-1964. Dr. Daley was a Ballard Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Memphis. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, BSEE 1968, and the University of Rochester, MSEE 1970, PhD 1973. Dr. Daley’s early work focused on human eye tracking and the development of predictive mathematical models. He received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Dept. of Ophthalmology and Laboratory of Neurophysiology, Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, Portland, OR. He then obtained a position at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland where he conducted research on methodologies to detect subtle changes in vision associated with diseases such as optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis and became interested in neurological diseases and traumatic brain injury. In 1988 he accepted a position as an associate professor in electrical engineering at Memphis State University (now The University of Memphis). Dr. Daley began to work on cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure and has presented his work at several international conferences, including the Intracranial Pressure (ICP) meetings. His research included collaborations with several colleagues at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. His most recent work focused on modeling of blood flow through the brain and alterations caused by traumatic stroke. His goal was to develop a method to continuously assess cerebrovascular pressure regulation from pressure recordings obtained from brain-injured patients in the intensive care setting. This knowledge would be critical to adapting the clinical care individually to the patient, hopefully greatly improving the outcome of procedures employed. In this endeavor Dr. Daley enlisted collaborations in the USA, Europe, and Scandinavia. For several years Dr. Daley directed the high school regional Science Olympiad and a summer enrichment program for rising ninth graders. In 1997 he served as President of the Tennessee Academy of Science. In 1996 he received an Outstanding Engineer award from IEEE and was a Life Senior Member. Dr. Daley has contributed to over 50 articles to professional publications and holds a patent. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Carol; his daughter and son-in-law Leah and Stephen Uftring of Fredericksburg, VA. He also leaves behind his siblings: James (Lorraine) of So. Dennis, MA; John of Hyannis, MA; and Mary Perini (Richard) of Arlington, MA; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

We will miss you friend and classmate.
We had Mr Eaton for a special math class together.
A few of us got 800's on our Math  SAT's.
I always remember you writing in my yearbook "To the Brain thats Lazy"
I guess that was because I never seemed to pay attention but when Mr Eaton called on me I would give the answer.  In reality from what we read on your obituary and your career you were the real Brain.  Dave Rivers Friend & Classmate

I will always remember the sock hops at the Immaculate Conception church in Cambridge where we tore up the floor. I'm glad he got to pursue his dream as a radio DJ. You might remember his radio personas, Jack Shannon or Jack Diamond. Lexington

Marshall Derby may be best known as the Lexington Housing Assistance Board (LexHAB) chairman, a position he held for 15 years. He died Wednesday, May 16 at his home at age 64.

Marshall Derby always gave his friends laughter, retaining his sharp wit to the end of his battle
with pancreatic cancer.

He was also a giver to total strangers, helping families in need have a chance to live in Lexington. He gave his family love, showering his wife, two children and four grandchildren with caring, understanding and knowledge.

But Derby’s own words about giving, read by his friend and business partner Morton Hodin during his eulogy to Derby at Temple Isaiah Friday, describe him best. “What you get is a living, what you give is a life.

” He died Wednesday, May 16 at his home at age 64.

Derby may be best known as the Lexington Housing Assistance Board (LexHAB) chairman, a position he held for 15 years. Combining his professional knowledge of real estate development with his genuine desire to help others, he took the reins of the town’s municipal affordable housing organization and quadrupled its stock.

“During his period of leadership and inspiration LexHAB increased its housing stock from 12 to 15 units to the 50 we now have,” said Bill Hays, who has served on the LexHAB board since its inception in 1983. “We’ll be hard put to find any three people who will together be able to give the town and our agency the expertise, the inspiration, the commitment and the leadership that Marshall brought to bear.”

Derby coordinated a collaborative effort between the town, the Lexington Rotary Club, and Minuteman Regional’s carpentry program to acquire available lots in Lexington and build houses on them, to become available for low to moderate income families seeking to live in Lexington.

“Not only was he very, very smart, and had all sorts of business acumen, but he was also a real doer,” said Selectman Norman Cohen. “If he felt there was a chance we could get a piece of land and build a house on it, he persisted. He wouldn’t give up.”

Laura Derby, his wife, observed Derby over the years as he happily gave his time to helping young families find homes in Lexington. “It was so wonderful to watch. It mattered so much to him to help people live in our town who couldn’t normally.”

Derby was born on Dec. 19, 1942 in Arlington, where he also attended school through his graduation in 1960. He moved on to Tufts University, where he received his undergraduate degree in 1964 and master’s degree in 1965, the latter in chemical engineering.

He began his career in real estate development in 1969 with Benjamin L. Cohen and Sons and in 1986 he began at H & D Development, working alongside Hodin until 1995.

His life was filled with other duties, spent mainly for the benefit of others. Derby was a Lexington Town Meeting member for 20 years. He worked with the Junior Chamber of Commerce in the 70s at what is now the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Concord helping to teach young men who were incarcerated. He served as the president and trustee of the congregation at Temple Isaiah, and he worked with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) to provide free small-business administration consultation.

“He was most generous with his time, but he never bragged about it, so most people had any idea how much he was doing,” said Hodin.

Laura Derby said that despite his many duties away from home, her husband always put his family first. His daughter Rebecca pointed out that just like in his professional life and town life, he engaged his role as a father with compassion and understanding.

“He was very caring and giving man,” she said. “He listened well to what they were saying, and usually succeeded in helping them. He loved knowing how things worked. He had a very curious mind, and he loved sharing that.”

Derby was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a year ago, and since then he had been flooded by letters and visitors who eagerly accepted the chance to share with him the profound effect he had on them. According to Rebecca and Laura, they number in the hundreds.

In a letter sent to Derby from a resident that he helped move into Lexington through LexHAB, she wished him “warm thoughts, hugs, and positive energy,” and included a picture of her baby daughter.

“Although I have only met you on one occasion, you often cross my mind” said the resident, whose name was omitted by the Derby’s in consideration for her privacy. “Because of you and many others we are able to live in the community.”

The last months have provided an outlet for such sentiments.

“There’s nothing lucky about having a disease that you know will kill you soon,” said Laura Derby. “But it gave people a chance to say the things they wanted to him, and he to them, which was a good thing.” After years of bringing smiles to friends, family, and people he had never met, it was Marshall Derby’s turn to smile. The day before he died, according to Laura, his daughters Rebecca and Sara, and his grandchildren Nate, Sadie, Mark, and Eliza, sat by his bedside and spoke to him.

“At that point, he was able to do very little,” she said. “But he heard their voices, and he got that huge smile on his face.”

From Mark Kahan on October 14th, 2010
Dear AHS Classmates, no simple note can capture the wonderful caring man Marshall was. He had a quick wit, and a bright, realistic, do-the-right-thing style. He made things happen.

I had the great privilege of being his friend from grade school through AHS, Tufts, and beyond. Our dads’ cars would be parked in the local Temple’s lot, and if we could, we’d choose a car, hop in, and take turns tuning the radio to see who could get the furthest ball game. We laughed and shared. And, every time we saw each other over the decades, that never changed.

Marshall was a man apart. In talking, during his illness, he quipped, “Ah, if I had known then what I know now, I would have ordered more really expensive wine! :-)  When we were sad, he made us laugh. He set a standard as to what life is all about. Good friends are few and far between, and I, like many of you, feel blest in having known him.

We always played ball on wollaston ave in front of his house..we chopped down a few trees at what was called Kenny Hill Field. We would also catch many a garder snake  and a few grasshoppers..and many a frog in the pond ..try and build a tree house or fort  on top of a tree limb near his home..In the winter we would sled down Kenny Hill until we were close to being frozen and frost bite.  His mother lived to over 100 years old ..she was like an angel in demeaner..she always had an inviting spirit and always treated us kids with diginity and love..After Timmy died we would visit Mrs Hannon and share with her the wonderful hope of the resurrection..yes someday soon Timmy will hear Jesus' voice and come out of the memorial tomb and live a peaceful life on a paradise earth promised  by our Savior Jesus Christ ...John 5:28 and 29

Jan was the love of my life for nearly forty years. She was a wonderful mother, a wonderful wife, and a wonderful friend. It has been almost ten years since I lost her and, even though I have moved on with my life, there is never a day that I don't think of her. I often think of the wonderful times we enjoyed while at AHS (I was class of 59) and the start of our married life back in Arlington. The day after we lost her a rainbow surrounded our home in Rochester, NY which inspired me to write a book about how our lost loved ones stay in touch with us. This book, Jan's Rainbow, has helped many people deal with losses and I re-dedicate it to Jan. Forever in my heart - Lindsay

George and I were the best of friends.  We both llived in the 100 block of Brattle Street.  "The Hill" to residents.   I still have a picture of the two of us, at or about age 4, wearing (those dreaded) snow suits and up to our waists in the white stuff. We were the same age and went through Cutter, JHW and AHS together.  While we inevitably drifted apart as I moved around the country, I can say that my life has been the better for having known George.

I remember Paul, but not during our Arlington High School Years.  It was the summer before he passed away. (1968 sounds right.)  At the time we were both in the Army National Guard of Mass.  It was during our summer 1968 two-week active duty in Camp Drum New York where we became friends.  We were both in the 1st Battalion 110th Armor HQ'd in Worcester Mass.  We spent those two weeks shuttling ammo between 90mm tank ranges and the ammo dump ... a dirty job both Paul and I, well, endured mainly by cleansing our lungs with a 6-pack most every night.
After summer camp, we both returned to our regular National Guard Jobs, me as Medical Platoon Sgt. and Paul in the Transportation platoon of our HQ Company in Worcester.  We made plans to get together but he was hospitalized, I learned, shortly after summer camp.  It must have been in November 1968, during a week-end drill, that I learned he had passed away.  It's funny how after all these years you remember such details and how a re-kindled friendship, albiet short, resurects itself. and how Paul made that summer camp, on a dirty job, that much more bearable over 42 years ago!

 Dear Lee,
I have carried the memory of you with me for 55 years.  You brought more joy to the world in fifteen years than many others can  in so many more.  Your warmth, your humor, your love and your kindness will live forever.  I grieve for the life you lost, but I have never forgotten you.  You can still make me smile with thoughts of the fun, mischief, affection and friendship we shared.

Love always,
Joyce
