Gloucester - William A. DeSimone, 76, of Gloucester, formerly of Stow and Arlington, Mass., passed away Wednesday morning, March 27, 2019, at the Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington. He was the husband of Constance D. (Steward) DeSimone. Bill was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 3, 1942. He is the son of the late Gabriel and Theresa (Rusci) DeSimone.
Bill graduated from Arlington High School in 1960. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1964 from Tufts University, followed by a Master of Education in 1967 from Boston University. In 1991 he obtained a Master of Business Administration from Babson College. He was curious by nature, and loved to learn new things either in an academic setting or independently.
Bill started his career teaching science and math at The Rivers School in Weston, Mass. He joined Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard, Mass., and spent the rest of his career in the IT business. He had been retired from Hewlett-Packard for several years at the time of his death.
Bill had many interests and activities. He loved music of all kinds, having had his own combo band starting in high school. Also in high school, he enjoyed league bowling with his uncle. Bill liked good competition whether physical or mental. He played golf and tennis. In the early 1990s he learned to figure skate, and especially enjoyed synchronized skating with the team at Colonial Figure Skating Club in Boxborough, Mass. He played bridge, backgammon, and is a life member of the U.S. Chess Federation. Recently he enjoyed helping with the Chess Clubs at Rockport High School and the Gloucester Senior Center.
In addition to his wife with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, he is survived by one son, John DeSimone of Marlborough, Mass; one grandson, Xavier Brown of Natick, Mass; one sister, Geraldine DeSimone of Arlington, Mass; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
His funeral service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA, on Friday, April 5, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's name may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, 48 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are made by the Campbell Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester, MA.
